CILIP Copyright Conference 2021 in Association with Naomi Korn Associates

For the 11th year, Naomi Korn Associates was proud to partner with CILIP in producing the annual CILIP Copyright Conference, attended online by over 140 people. Aimed at Library and Information Professionals and chaired by Naomi Korn, the day was keynoted by Professor Melissa Terras from the University of Edinburgh. Her presentation succinctly set the scene from an academic researcher’s perspective, invoking the importance of the need to make the right  decisions regarding content selection and publication to avoid a “black hole of 19th and 20th century content”. Decisions made on a copyright basis can skew the digital record and inhabit research. Subsequent presentations enforced the principle of making brave decisions regarding copyright, orphan works and the exceptions to copyright and the dangers of risk aversion. During Covid year, the conference presentations focused on the pivotal role of copyright in the lifecycle of content access, use and reuse.

Naomi Korn said: “Like every year, the CILIP Copyright Conference enables sectorial professionals to find reassurance from both speakers and colleagues and take stock of where they are and what they need/could do next regarding copyright and licensing. These decisions are crucial in ultimately shaping the digital record. The CILIP Copyright Conference is therefore an essential must-attend in the diary”

Rachel Kudlick said: “The Copyright Conference is a key moment in the CILIP calendar of events and this year, in spite of it’s virtual format, Naomi developed a programme which encouraged attendees to engage and share experiences as well as reflect on their own practices. It is always a pleasure to work with Naomi and I look forward to collaborating with her on our, hopefully, in-person event in 2022.”

Presentations from the CILIP Copyright Conference 2021 will be available shortly online, visit the website by clicking here.

CILIP and Naomi Korn Associates hope that next year’s CILIP Copyright Conference will be in person – please watch this space for dates.
