AI and Copyright: Navigating Risks and Opportunities for Museums in Ireland and Northern Ireland

Naomi Korn was delighted to deliver a specialist webinar titled AI and Copyright: Navigating Risks and Opportunities for Museums in Ireland and Northern Ireland in partnership with The Irish Museums Association (IMA) on 4 November. The webinar provided the audience of museum professionals with practical insights into how AI technologies intersect with copyright law, ethical considerations, and risk management. Through an expert-led presentation and interactive discussions, participants explored real-world scenarios and strategies for compliance, ensuring that museums can innovate responsibly while safeguarding creators’ rights and institutional integrity.

Museums are increasingly exploring AI tools for cataloguing, digitisation, interpretation, and audience engagement. However, these innovations raise complex questions about copyright ownership, licensing, and ethical use of data. The Irish Museums Association identified a pressing need to equip its members with knowledge and strategies to address these challenges.

Highlights outlined by attendees included:

•             Learning about the work done by other organisations (case studies shared).

•             Acknowledgement through(out) the presentation of how much new technology/AI is affecting or will affect how collections are managed/work of museums.

•             Increased understanding about AI and copyright as an output of the event.

This initiative reflects IMA’s commitment to supporting the sector in adapting to technological change and Naomi Korn Associates’ expertise in rights management and policy development. Together, they delivered an important skills-development intervention that empowers museums to make informed decisions about AI adoption, balancing innovation with legal and ethical obligations.
